USB ports too dirty?

Whenever I plug anything into my front USB ports, it just says "USB Device Not Recognized". The same things work in the back, on my other USB ports, but the front ones just don't work. And the ports look really, really dirty.

is there any good way to clean these? I don't mean like..free floating dust..I mean like..there is GUNK on them. I can't think of a good way to fix them =/
 
could ur front usb ports (the ones on ur case right?) be plugged in correctly on ur mobo?
 
I have a laptop with 2 usb ports
the top one only works with some devices, but the bottom one is fine with everything

I dunno, maybe some weird usb issue (not brave enough to open lappy)
If it gets power off the usb port itself sometimes i have to unplug it and wait a while then replug.
