Hello,
I have a friend who has an old Compaq desktop PC running WinXP Home.
The computer is at least 4 years old but it was running fine until 1 day he tried to print something and it would not print.
I went over to help him troubleshoot the problem and I found out every time I would try to plug something into any USB port, Whatever I would plug in would show up in the lower right corner as “unknown device” I tried many USB thumb drives, I tried an external USB HDD, iPod, and of course the printer. They all show up as “unknown device”.
I updated and ran AVG antivirus and Malwarebytes but they found no virus or malware just cookies.
I even went into Device Manager and uninstalled all 4 “USB root hub” and reboot but we still get the same problem.
What is going on here? Is this a hardware problem and how do I troubleshoot this?
Thanks in advance

Are these the front USB case ports or the rear motherboard ports? When you uninstalled all the hubs in the device manager did they show back up as unknown devices or anything? Seems like since it is recognizing that at least *something* is getting plugged in that they are not completely dead. Would guess its software related. Full reformat/restore always works, but if it is hardware then you'd have to replace the mobo.

Shut down the PC. Unplug the AC plug going to the power supply. Push the power button on the front of the case to drain the power supply. Plug it back in, power up and see if they work now. USB ports are limited to 500ma of current. If a device tries to exceed that the overload protection circuit will trip and the 5v supply to the USB port(s) will shut down. It happened to me and just rebooting doesn't seem to fix it. I had to do as above to get them working again. So far for me it has only happened once. I was getting a lot of unknown device prompts like you mentioned.

I'm sorry :( I took so long to reply

I did a restore as wizang suggested and now all the USB port's work great. :)
Thanks to both of you for your help.
