USB ports electrifying and other problems

Every time I plug in a peripheral (ie iPod) into an USB port, it becomes charged with electricity. However, the electricity flows on both the inside and the outside so whenever I touch it, it shocks me. Is this normal behavior? It is starting to get annoying and I get scared that the peripheral would like get over electrified everytime I plug it in.

Another problem that occurs is that my USB 2.0 ports don't work. I have a MSI K8N Neo Platinum so it is supposed to have a few of these. All of my ports are 1.1 or below now. I have a Standard Enhanced PCI to USB controller, but I don't know how to use it. I tried popping in the MSI CD that came with the Mobo, but it required me to get Windows XP Service Pack 1. I have Service Pack 2....it should have it right?
 
1) No you should NOT be getting shocked, something is wrong.
2) Since you are getting shocked when you plug in and un plug things, it points to a grounding issue. (The only metal part of the USB cable you can easily touch is the silver outside which is a chassis ground. Your USB peripherals probably would not work if it were an electrical problem on any of the signal cables)

I would first check that the computer is plugged into a properly grounded outlet. Also check that you motherboard is properly installed and that all cables are completely seated (such as motherboard power). Verify that your cables are not damaged. If you are still having problems it’s probably an issue with the mainbord. I honestly would not use the ports if they are shocking you, because there is more than likely a very good chance that damage to your equipment can occur.
 
Hm.. strangely, the peripherals still work when shocking me. I have found a temporary solution (for the iPod at least)....firewire.
Any one know anything about USb 2.0?
 
Do you get shocked when you touch the metal on your case? That is really weird that you get shocked using usb but not firewire. :confused:
 
Are you using the USB ports built onto the motherboard, or are you using the case's USB Ports attached to your motherboard? If it's the latter, make sure you have attached the black wires from the USB headers, as those are the ground wires.

As for the USB 1.1 port issue, try going into devce manager and updating the driver on the USB hub host controller. I had a similiar issue with a different motherboard and Service Pack 1 for XP. All it took was "updating" the USB drivers and they started working again.

First I used the USB ports in the front of the case. The problem occurred, so I decided to use the back USB ports (motherboard ones). Still, same thing.

Updating drivers didn't work. Here's a picture of my device manager and what I get after trying to update.

What kind of shock are you talking about? Are you talking about a shock from static electricity or like a shock from sticking your finger in a light socket? Getting a static shock from touching the case is normal to an extent, but getting shocked with 120VAC certainly is not normal.
 
no you should not get zapped EVERY time you touch it.. once in a while is one thing, its just you being statically charged and the case beign grounded. but if its almost allways, somethign is up.
