I was on my Dual Xeon box tonight, and my microphone was acting up so I decided to see if rebooting would help. Well, XP was starting back up when I noticed it was about to run a CHKDSK I has scheduled about a week earlier (I don’t reboot very often). I attempted to skip the disk check by pressing any key when I found out that my keyboard wasn’t responding. I rebooted again and once again failed to be able to skip the disk check. It seems that my keyboard works in the BIOS setup window, works in windows, but doesn’t work during that intermediate period while windows is booting (the time in which scheduled disk checks run). Why the hell would this be the case?

I also have an issue where my Dual Athlon server will NOT boot if it can see the USB keyboard.

I’m thinking that either both these computers just have piss poor USB support or it has to do with the fact that I’m running my devices through a hub. It’s not just a hub, but a USB KVM switch that is essentially a hub.

Also, I’ve noticed that when working on other people’s computers, especially when they are running 98 or Me, it’s a real hit or miss as to if a USB keyboard will work or not. Even if it does, it usually doesn’t recognize it until I’m already in windows, and I usually have to have a regular keyboard plugged in to avoid the “keyboard not detected” bios error.

So does anyone else here have so many damn problems with USB keyboards?
 
USB keyboards work well for me but you do have to go into the bios and enable bios USB keyboard support. If you don't enable it in the bios then the keyboard will only function in the bios and windows itself, nothing in between.
 
Ah, that is what I was going to suggest. :) Check your BIOS. Now, why can't you use PS/2? They are perfectly fine. There's no difference and basically you take up one less USB port for your other important devices.

On a related note, The new Dell Optiplex's we're getting in at work don't even have PS2 ports on them. All USB, I believe 6 or 8 in the back and I think 2 up front. Plus 2 on the keyboard.

Fine by me! I think PS/2 ports should go the way of the floppy drive.
