I have a logitech harmony remote that I use for my TV, however, I don't have it working with my HTPC. I need recommendations for a budget/generic IR sensor that I can use with the PC. Thanks.

Just go to ebay and find a media center remote with an IR receiver. You should be able to get one shipped for around $10.

Something like this should do the trick.

Yep the media center or receiver is the way to go.

It's codes are in logitechs database and it works great.

yuck, chuck that remote as soon as you liberate the IR receiver!

The Media Center remote codes are generic so no worries about compatibility. I do recall it being a little obtuse trying to get the Harmony to use the right codes, but once I found out where they were hiding it was easy.

Make sure you get an RC6 MCE remote, not one of the ones that sends keystrokes. I personally use the Hauppage MCE USB remote, but any that says it is RC6 will do the trick.

I've got a USB IR receiver with the remote if you're interested. After I upgraded to a Moneual case with a built in IR receiver it's just been sitting in a box.

Back in the day when I was wondering the same question as you, I believe the most configurable solution was a USB-UART, but I don't know if that's still the case.

I just bought one at Frys, for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it, was only like $15. Its USB, has a clip to clip it to your monitor if need be. I think it uses IMON software. I had it working on my HTPC with my Harmony before I moved to my new house, haven't bothered with the HTPC, still unpacking.

I thought about doing this but went with the Lenovo media remote for $30 when it was on sale. Full keyboard and two button mouse is hard to beat for $30.

I've got an iMON receiver in my main HTPC, but due to difficulties getting reliable button presses from my Harmony I've got an MCE remote on it as well. I only use the iMON for waking the HTPC - it can do an almost-cold boot (i.e. so long as the power cord hasn't been physically removed from the PSU).
