in looking into a mid-range gaming soundcard and mid-high end headphones(for cs and lots of music of different types) that are either stereo or 5.1 surround, i came across a newegg link to this Plantronics DSP-500 usb headset, which uses a built-in dsp and alledgedly (spelling?) is very good. As I am on a definite budget, what do you guys say to these?

USB headsets bypass your soundcard, so that is not what you want if you are also in the market for a souncard.

I'd recommend some flavor of Audigy 2 for a gaming soundcard. For headphones, mid/high end and built-in mic (headset) are generally mutually exclusive. Most people would say combine a separate desktop or clip-on mic with a good set of headphones. As for a good set of headphones for games and music, you can do a search on this forum to find many threads with the basic topic. Some examples are:

the idea behind buying the usb headset is that i won't also have to buy a soundcard. currently i am running crappy (and i really mean crappy) stereo speakers i got with my gateway computer two and a half years ago with onboard ac97 sound. can't really get any worse. i need to spend the least possible, and due to my parents' disposition towards gaming in general and listening to music late at night while they're trying to sleep across the hallway, i need headphoes and not speakers.

reading the comments given for this usb headset on newegg make it sound fantastic, with both good sound quality and good mic quality. however, i just wanted to run it by you guys.
 
Onboard sound is pretty decent nowadays. Decent enough that in the vast majority of cases, for stereo listening, your money is best spent on speakers/headphones. You said yourself that your speakers are crappy. Spend all your budget on better speakers/headphones. Then, later, you can buy a soundcard. USB headsets are silly.

P.S. Newegg comments aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Especially WRT audio gear.
 
why aren't newegg comments worth anything? what's WRT gear? and why aren't usb headsets worth it?

what headphones would you recommend if not this headset? if possible, i would like a built-in microphone for cs and skype

USB headsets aren't worth it because they are a dead end WRT upgrading. You spoke earlier of upgrading beyond integrated sound.

I already reccommended you a headphone. Senn HD 497. Get a shirtclip mike of some kind at radio shack or on your amazon order.
 
this discussion has advanced quite a bit on other forums, but now i'm sending out a plea for links to any good headphones review sites and/or audiophile forums.
 
I tried two usb cards from creative: soundblaster Extigy and soundblaster MP3+
they didn't have EAX acceleration so I was disappointed about them even soundblaster Audigy2 NX doesn't have AudioHQ,
what I recommand for you, if you have a laptop, immediately goto PCMCIA soundblaster Audigy2 zs, it is better than USB model in many features.
