I originally posted this over in Computer Audio but I'm thinking it may have been the wrong place... Here it is again:
I recently bought the Turtle Beach AK-R8 to try out and come to my own conclusions about 5.1 vs. stereo for gaming exclusively (no not sound quality, but utility for me). I tried them, wasn't terribly impressed but I still have to test more in depth with my Sennheisers 280 pros...
I'm running Vista 64-bit and had no problem installing the audio advantage srm device and using the headset. However, I let my friend borrow them to see if he noticed much of an advantage. He is using WinXP media center edition and has had nothing but problems.
At first his mobo (Asus P5N-D) drivers were not installed correctly so I fixed that, but it didn't fix the problem. I've also tried plugging them into every usb port on his mobo including the one utilizing the header on the mobo - still has problems.
Problem #1 (Minor): White noise. I could hardly hear any white noise but it was bothering him even when sounds weren't playing. This isn't a deal-breaker, but if someone know what could cause this with USB that would be great.
Problem #2 (Major): First time we started up left4dead and went to play, his computer blue screened. It seemed also to happen when he went into the audio options of L4D. However I eventually did the WinXP test hardware option (in the sound control panel) and it would blue screen while testing.
Eventually I turned all the mic voice and speech inputs to the Audigy2 that is also on the system and tested and the test passed. But of course that doesn't let me use the headset. I changed it back and surprisingly the test passed but the mic still didn't work in L4D. Upon rebooting, the same blue screen problem happens again.
I'm not sure where to go from here as the Headset worked fine in Vista and on my PC. The only thing I can think of is that it has to do with the USB subsystem of the PC, but I have no idea how to verify that. We were able to use a different USB headset (plantronics) previously but I'm not sure if that is as taxing as the AK-R8...
