USB HDD corruption problems

Was on "vacation" escaping hurricane Rita yesterday using my Maxtor USB HDD with my old Dell laptop. Out of the blue when I went to rename some pictures everything lost its extensions and became renamed with strange characters not in the alphabet. Attempts to open and verify that the data was still there failed. Suspecting some sort of virus possibly at work I shut off the laptop and HDD till I got home today and attempted to start up the drive on my home machine, fully expecing a virus to be found by my virusscan and some corrupted data to recover. No sign of a virus... so far... but the data is throughly trashed. The drive is not at all accessable through conventional methods and reports as corrupted when I try to open in explorer. Even when looking for everything to recover with a data recovery program, some files appear to be missing.

What might have gone wrong? Is there a quick fix? What is the best data recovery program (if I need one)? CAn I use a repair program? Any ideas would be appreciated.
