I was thinking today while my laptop was really bogged down with HD access (my fault, I only have 512m ram in it), in addition to adding more ram, if I were to use a spare raptor as a USB drive and boot from there, would that alleviate the problem or does anyone out there do this for the sole purpose of increasing access and transfer speed? Laptop HDs are so expensive at 7200rpm, it seems this would be a much more cost-effective strategy for someone like me that uses the laptop mostly as a portable desktop for developing.
- thanks in advance

You could, but personally I'd sell the Raptor and just buy a nice 2.5" drive. USB 2.0 has about 60 MB/sec total bandwidth, usually around 40 MB/sec real world throughput, buying a nice 7200 RPM 2.5" drive would be about the same and you wouldn't have to lug around a ext. drive.

I can say -with high certanty- that 40MB/s for a USB-enclosed and connected HDD is a very optimistic figure.
