ok so I have a Adaptec USB 3.5" external enclosure (Product Link) and a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 200Gb ata/133 HDD in it (Product Link)

The drive detects fine, I can browes the drive in explorer jsut fine, but when ever I write large files (or large amounts of small files such as a music libary) to the drive it fails, lags my comp, and puts up an error out of the system tray. I can copy say 1.5Gb of dats just fine (and fast too) but after that it gose hay wire. It also fails to even let me browes the drive if it has sat on and idle for 10 or more mins, then it will lags and error out as soon as I try to access the drive again....

im going to try copying form the drive right now to see if it get problems with that...

Your "sits idle for 10 minutes" comment makes me wonder if there's a power management going on here. But, I don't know if I know what I'm talking about, either, so... ;)

im atcually, thinking it might have something to do with the Quite drive stuff on the Maxtor.. trying to figure out how to kill it..

Pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it via IDE to your computer as a slave or master of an additional channel (depends how your system is setup). This will single out the USB enclosure as being a factor. Remember you're using a shared 480Mb/s peak (not sustained, like Firewire) USB chain to transmit data - not the most reliable in the world. I've seen dozens of situations where the external drive was thought to have failed but the drive inside worked 100% fine, it was the enclosure's cheap electronics that failed. Best of luck.

yea thats the thing, the drive works fine inside my computer. This is the third enclouser I have had this drive in, all have givin me some problems, not exactly the same but still problems. This last one I went out and spent some extra money on thinking "Adaptec" woudl have agood product, the quality is 100% better than all the sub 50$ cases at newegg, but it still dosnt work.

I finally just tried my bosses 3/5" enclosure, I have copied a 32gb music folder back and forth 3 times, it has not failed yet, his was only liek 30 bux, so im gonna buy one like his now.. I guess..

I had a firewire one once, How the hell do oyu make it work with the firewire plug? It would not pick up on my computer, im intrested in getting the one my boxx has, but paying mroe for the one with firewire and USB 2.0, but i could not get it working last time

Something tells me it was a problem between your USB port (its controller and/or driver) and the USB case's controller/translator. They simply didn't mesh. If you really want to get geek on it, try updating core USB drivers on your PC and/or using a different port (perhaps front instead of back or vice-versa) with the enclosures that were giving you trouble.

tried 4-5 diffrent computers and 3 usb2.0 laptops... same thing, the same computers that other external drive have worked fine on..
