USB drives as smart cards?

I was wondering if there was a way to use a USB thumb drive in the same manor you would use a smart card. That is to lock and unlock the computer by inserting or removing it. I've been trying to find some leads on google but keywords dont seem to be working for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
