Portable USB drive works for XP but not for 7? Why do I get the USB Drivers Cannot Be Found message?!?!

it could be ghost entries in the device manager for the usb devices.. on the windows 7 machine
try deleting all ghost entries for any usb device entries in the device manager pertaining to your device.. also are you plugging the extra usb plug from the external hard drive in, if it has one? ( it still sounds like a conflict with ghost devices in the device manager causing the issue..) i've had these issues before and cleaning all the ghost entries in the device manager solved it for me.
to turn on the unconnected device/ghost entries to be shown in the device manager.
press and hold the windows key while pressing the pause key, then release.
now on the left of that window, select "Advanced system settings" then select the "advanced" Tab on the window that opens, then at the bottom of that window click "environment variables"
now, on the bottom of that window you will see a "System Variables" drop list, below that click the "New" button.
for "Variable Name" enter: DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
for "Variable Value" enter: 1
then apply and close that window..
now, when you open your device manager and select "Show Hidden Devices" from the menu bar, it will show ALL hidden devices..
DO NOT remove any ghost entries from the "Sound, video and game controllers","Storage volume shadow copies" ,or "System devices" lists.
this should solve your problem.
Hope this helps!! good luck.

Just wondering.

You're using the same computer but just updated to w7?

If not how do you know it works with XP?

Was one system 32bits and one 64bits?

Just wondering....? :)

No exclamation marks in Device Manager. Nothing under Event Viewer.

@mtx:
Remove any ghosted entries under "Disk Drives", "Portable Devices","Storage Volumes" and "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Now try reconnecting your drive, it should pick it up now.
also check in your bios and see if your usb device is set to "USB High Speed (480mbps) " or "USB Full speed (12mbps) " .
you want this to be set to "USB High Speed (480mbps)" this could also cause the issue.
Hope this helps, Good luck!!
