USB device problem in Windows 7

I bought a multi-console HitBox to play fighting games with and it uses a PS360+ board. I tried plugging the HitBox into my computer, but I always get a "USB Device Not Recognized" message. After that Windows 7 installs a driver for "Unknown Device" and is listed under USB Devices in Device Manager as "Unknown Device".

If I try to use Update Driver and choose from a list of devices, it mainly lists drivers USB Hubs and maybe a Microsoft keyboard or two. The Xbox 360 controller driver isn't even listed and I know it's on my machine because I have it installed for my Madcatz SF4 TE stick.

As a test I plugged in the HitBox to my Xbox 360 and it worked. I booted up my previous PC (the current one was built about 3 or 4 weeks ago) with Windows 7 and it detected the HitBox as a HID USB Input Device.

I'm really at a loss about what to do now. Anyone have any ideas?

uninstall the drivers, use driver sweeper then re-install. Common for windows to be confused by driver sets. happens all the time with imaging devices.

Ok, just an update, but I fixed it by accident. A friend suggested plugging it into a USB hub and Windows picked it up as an HID-compliant game controller. And to add another wrinkle to that, if I boot up my system with the HitBox already plugged in (into the USB hub) it registers as an Xbox 360 controller. If I plug it in while my system is already running, it just registers as the generic HID-compliant game controller. It'll work both ways, but the button icons are different for whichever one Windows picks the HitBox up as.

Anyone have any idea why it worked when connected to a USB hub but not a USB port right on the motherboard/case?

if the hub is powered then likely the OS has selective suspending on USB devices enabled in the OS power config.
