Hey

A friend of mine has a corrupted USB flash drive. Is there such program that would allow to recover the lost files?

Freeware recommendation is most welcome

PS: Every time she tries to access the file, she is prompted with “format disk” message.

Any help you provide is greatly appreciated

To be honest, when flash drives come up with that warning, 9 times out of ten the drive is dead, even tho it says format disc, she may not be able to format the disc due to failure, many usb flashdrives have died with me that way.

They work one day and the next you get the format disc warning when trying to open it and when you try to format the disc it wont allow it, I am not saying this is the case here, but chances are it could very well be, as for saving stuff I am afraid it is a long shot, I dont think you will get anything off of the drive, but who knows you may, but since its asking to be formatted, dont hold your breath on recovering any data or if the thing will work again.

I tried this proggie called BadCopyPro once, saved my a** once.
It's not free, but it'll let you scan the drive for free, just wont save any files. LMK how that goes, I might be able to help more

If no recovery software finds anything on the drive, it might have a damaged controller chip.
If the flash chip is alive, data still can be recovered in the data recovery companies who have flash reader and software to put the pieces of flash memory in the right order.

Thanks for the helpful replies guys. She is going to try the software but I won’t know until next week. I already told her to expect the worst.

Good thing she printed all the work

Depends. Yes many times the drive is dead but I've seen people pull the drives out of a machine while the machine is writting to it have this message come up. Use to see this at least once a week where I use to work(people would bring the drives in and I'd recover the data). Either way it goes without saying to always have a backup of your data.
