I am using the computer in my sig and my DS3 doesn't have firewire. I was thinking about buying a mini dv camcorder and was wondering if I could use USB to transfer the files instead of firewire. I know absolutely nothing about video editing and such so your help would be greatly welcome!

Not only can you use USB 2.0, but you can also get a piece of machinery something like [1] and have a multi purpose, sweet action, TVR, PVR, etc. If money is a concern, most cameras have the option of using USB [2] or you could even go for a firewire card [3] and kill a few more birds. The firewire cards go for as little as $6 before shipping.

I personally suggest option 1, since you can use that to record or interface with almost any device. For my upcoming build (see sig) I'm doing the same.

[2] I did a powersearch on newegg for usb connections inside camcorders: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Value=1819:12350&PropertyCodeValue=1819:12349

Thanks for the help Nate I will have to decide what I want to do now....You gave me exactly what I needed!

If you're buying a MiniDV camcorder, just add a Firewire card for $10. Firewire is a direct digital transfer of the video from the tape to the computer... that's the best way to go. If you were to use the Hauppauge WINTV USB box, you'd be capturing analog video out of the camcorder. Yuck.

It would seem like a step in the opposite direction to shoot digital video and then transfer it over analog AV cables.
