I've used USB 2.0 video adapters in the past when another display was needed and there was no other option. They sucked, as you might imagine, but generally worked well enough if the display is being used to display mostly static information.

I have not used a USB 3.0 video adapter yet. Is there an improvement compared to 2.0 adapters? Are they at a point yet (unlike USB 2.0 video adapters) where it doesn't lag with basic 2D content anymore?

Do 3.1 adapters exist yet?

I can't tell you from experience, but all reviews say that yes, they are a major improvement. They improved both the transfer rate and added a more efficient codec, so anything short of 4k should look good.

Can't comment on lag though.

I've had great luck with the USB 2.0 and 3.0 varieties of DisplayLink certified adapters. They are a little more expensive than the super cheap ones but work dramatically better. I use one every day at work and wouldn't honestly be able to tell you which monitor was on the USB adapter if I hadn't set it up myself.
