between USB 2.0 and 3.0:

If i were to use a USB 2.0 device with a 3.0 cable and a 3.0 conection, would the device run at USB 3.0? by that im asking, is it upward compatible?

Also if i were to plug the front panel USB connections on my case into a USB 3.0 connection on the mobo, would they work at 3.0 speeds or remain at 2.0?

AND

for 3.0, would i have to buy 3.0 cables for a 3.0 device, or would the 2.0 cables carry the speed of the 3.0?

First question - No, it won't run at 3.0 connection. The device itself must support USB 3.0 in order to run at 3.0 speeds. The same goes for a USB 2.0. You can't expect a USB 1.1 device to perform at USB 2.0

Second question - Yes, they will work but, it depends on the USB connections on the case. If the case has the newer USB 3.0 connections, then it will work at USB 3.0. If the computer case just has the USB 2.0 connection, then it will only work at USB 2.0 speeds. USB 3.0 has five new connections added.

Third Question - Yes, you will need to buy the new 3.0 cables for a 3.0 device. Since the new USB 3.0 has five new connections, the cables themselves must also have these connections also to take advantage of the new technology.

1) No
2) 2.0 if the case ports are 2.0.
3) yes, you would need 3.0 cables

edit: HG beat me.
