usb 1.1 vs firewire 400

What's faster?

I'm trying to ship a external hard drive to my girlfriend overseas but her laptop (new compaq) is only usb 1.1 compliant. Few external hdd's have the firewire option, though i'm not too familiar with it. Would that be faster than the usb 1.1 that she has learned to hate now?
 
USB 1.1 is about 10mbit and firewire is 400mbit. USB2 is about as fast as firewire so you can use either of those. If you want to use usb, buy a usb2 pc card and you should be set.
