According to this report, the U.S. Justice Department urged state prosecutors to reject a confidential complaint filed by Google that claimed Microsoft discourages use of the company’s desktop search program.

Google accused Microsoft of designing its Vista operating system to discourage use of Google's desktop search program, according to a Microsoft spokesman. The complaint is tied to a consent decree that monitors Microsoft's behavior as part of its landmark 2002 antitrust settlement with the U.S. government.

If this wins i can foresee lawsuits pertaining to the inability to replace Vista's Windows Explorer. Not that i like Vista's Windows Explorer (or whatever the hell the file browser is being called nowadays).

I am starting to get annoyed with Google. Some of their 'products' are just not as useful or needed. I'd rather have the search feature as part of the OS rather then tack on another app. Google Desktop is fairly useless IMO.

Is that a realistic expectation? Would Microsoft bundle Google apps?

On the flip side, why don't the 'geniuses' at Google develop their own OS and then lets see if they let Microsoft technologies run on it or would they just pump out their own apps? Thought so.

Oh, I'm not pointing out that Google would allow that. I'm just questioning your idea of Microsoft allowing that.

I don't think he was saying that Microsoft should add Google Desktop to Windows. I think he was just saying that he would rather search be part of the OS itself and just come with Windows instead of you having to install a seperate program that allows you to search. Thus he doesn't really see that much of need for Google to make their Google Desktop.

Vista search is pretty good. Someone call the whaaaaambulance for Google.

It is normal that over time certain basic features are expected to just be there and work in the OS. Search has become one of these features.

If this were not the case you'd still need to get a copy of Trumpet Winsock to get on the net.

I like Vista. I think MSFT did a great job with it (bugs and all). I look forward to perf improvements and driver maturity that only come with time in the field.
