I have an abit ic7-max3 and the nb fan died on me. do i need that fan or can i run the system without the fan just the blue orb heatsink??? Please reply quickly

Get a new chipset hsf, it probably wont do any damage without one, but you never know. Get the passive zalman for like $12 shipped and never worry about it again.

Just get a small 40mm fan or something similar. My ic7-g max II had a bad fan, and I just removed the three screws under it and placed a 40mm low profire on it, same fan connector and it works flawlessly. This is at 1025Mhz + FSB. double sided 3m tape works really well to hold it on (no vibrations). ;)

;) no need for fan as long as your air cooling, with water cooling, yes you need like 4 cfm :p

man thinking about it im on my sixth motherboard, my 10th cpu, my third gpu, 4 sets of 2x512mb of ram, two psu's and 6 heat sinks in 3 years....

ryuii lol..

thanks guys for all your responses i have oiled my fan and it seems to be ok... for the moment. So as soon as i can im going to order that swiftech or thermalright nb-1

if you oiled it and it works fine, you shouldn't have to get another one. mine stopped spinning and I lubed it up and it's never run better. if it stops again, I'll oil it again!

why get somthing that has a fan if your air cooled, just use the zalman nb sink

Mainly because Zalman doesn't make a heatsink which will mount to that board. The MAX3 has loops instead of holes, so you'll end up using thermal adhesive which isn't optimal.

This was covered in the other thread that I linked to, IIRC.

i mounted it just fine on my max3 without epoxy ;) guess you arnt one for fabrication... lol you'd be amased with what you can do with whats laying around and how pro you can make it look, sorta like how i mounted my tdx on the dothan...

a wire fan grill took care of my nb sink's mounting as seen above

ryuii i would prefer a silent one so could you please tell me how u fitted it to the board.

Thanks in advance

I have the Swiftech mounted to my MAX 3 just fine, they do make one with the wire loops that will fit that board...

Here is a picture from the Swiftech site showing the included wire clips....

i snipped and bent a wire fan grill taken off of a psu just make sure it isnt too springy, those loops have a tendency of getting ripped out even with abits springs, just tight enough to hold it nice not tight like a heat sink for a cpu

Yeah. I used that one before I sold my board. I ran without the fan, tho.

How loud is the swiftech?

Loud is a subjective word...Mine is pretty quiet, I cant hear it over my other fans....

But then again, I mostly game, and I wear headphones......a bomb could go off, and I would never know it :)

lol... how loud is it in dba?? or basically would i be able to hear it over my tornado running at a low speed of 2000rpm

I doubt you would hear it over the Tornado...I also have a Swiftech CPU cooler, and that drowns out the NB cooler....

Also I have the stock fan, it worked fine when I removed it....If you want it its yours for the cost of shipping....probaly about $3.85 if it ships USPS priority....
