I knwo this is basic, but I would rather ask....

how do I choose what poer supply to get?

just add up all the watts used ...max watts used on all my computers?

2 or 3 systems, and 2 21 inch flat panels

I might put my flat screen on there as well.....I dunno

so, how do I figure this out?

and, (get ready, really dumb question coming)

do I have to worry if it is plugged into a 15 amp or 20 amp outlet?

will the UPS pull enough power to trip the was plug circuit?, or,, does the UPS shut off first?

or, would the equipment I have trip the home circuit breaker first, then the UPS would go into shutdown....correct>?

so how do I figure out if the UPS is TOO BIG for a 15 or 20 amp circuit?

thanks in advance, and this is the last piece to my "computing puzzle"

Well, let's start with this: a 15A circuit @ 120V (I'm assuming) is good for 1800VA. Let's assume there's absolutely nothing else on the circuit (not likely in most cases). All of the equipment you listed above will most likely come in under 1800VA. Do you have it all on one circuit right now? Are you looking to have the UPS shut down all of the systems? If so, you're going to need a more expensive UPS. Most consumer UPS's wont do multiple systems. To support multiple systems from a single UPS, you'll need a UPS that has network connectivity, or something similar. I've got an APC 2200VA rackmount SmartUPS with a network management card in my server rack. UPS's that require more than a 15A circuit will have a different style of plug that can't be plugged into a 15A outlet. In the US, 20A plugs have one of the straight blades rotated 90 degrees. What are the specs of the systems you want on the UPS?

I will list the specs.....yes, it would be a dedicated 15 amp service....

ok, here goes

to start, I am connecting 3 systems with two (2) 2209 wa dell 21.5 screens

Dell xps unit--- it says 100-240 volt/14A

compaq 620nx 120v/6A

dell 4500 dimension-- no notes

so, v is volts, a is amps

I am also going to try to look up the power draw of each "piece" online.

then , add those up and get to the UPS rating how?

thanks!

allen

I understand only one will be auto shutdown unless I get a more sophisticated UPS unit..(any suggestions here?)
