I have a 550W power supply. Do I need, if I want a UPS, to buy a 600W rated UPS or so? Could I skimp by with a 300W rates UPS?

You don't want a 300 watt UPS....my system overloads my 300 watt (500va) Belkin UPS with nothing but the tower hooked up with the system in my signature.

I can't even plug my monitor in or the whole thing shuts off. It starts beeping (as in overloaded) with anything 3d when the Geforce 6800 GT card kicks in.

500 VA UPS is worthless.

the thing to look at on the UPS is the output current (amperage), and the input current (amperage) of the power supply, make sure the UPS can output as much as the PSU will draw and then some

i have seen $500 hospital grade UPS's by OneAC that could not supply the current for a 500W power supply to run

Even if your PSU only produces 350W, at 70% efficiency that's still 500W at the wall. And a monitor pull a lot too. It's better to over do a UPS just as it's better to over do your PSU.

My 40 dollar APC from best buy does fine, no problems at all... check my sig for specs.... every plug is also used too!

I dont know... Someone have a definitive answer or link to this?

I went with one that have voltage regulation....APC is clearly the best UPS...I got a 100 one and it is the RS800VA or something..probably overkill but hey it works :)
