UPS suggestions

I want to make sure the power coming into my system is clean and well regulated.

I do not care about my printer, speakers, scanner, pencil sharpener etc. I'll have them plugged into there own Power strip/protector.

I suppose I just want to make sure my PC and Monitor are covered if there are drastic variations in my line power. Or if the power goes out I want time to properly shut down till I get my generator going (its sine wave). But mostly to make sure my crappy line power does not tax my PSU irregularly.

So,
I have an Antec NeoHE 500w PSU and a Samsung 38watt monitor (max).
I calculate 393 watts usage here.
This is with: an OC I will never get to, a dvd drive I don't have installed, a floppy that isn't installed, an extra usb, TDP 80%, PSU utilization 80%, surge &capacitor comp. @ 10%.

This is the UPS I am starting my search with Plenty pow. supply? Yes? No?

It is however a beast at :Height x Width x Depth (in) 9 x 6 x 18
Also, everything I have is black so it would be nice to find a black UPS (but not crucial).

Any other good recommendations / suggestions?

Very much appreciated!
Cheers

I recently bought APC BX1500 from Office Depot a few weeks ago. I think it's going to be just $50 AR (+ tax + stamp). That's supposed to be a very good UPS from what I've read.

PowerChute tells me that my load on it (monitor, CPU, and wireless router/modem) consumes in the low 200 W range of power, which translates to about 35-36 min. of battery life. Not too shabby! I don't plan to purposely drain my battery to test this out since I've read that it can hurt the battery's performance if it's drained all the way.

Your best bet is an online or "true" UPS. Powers the devices with a constantly monitored separate circuit. This has the
advantage of totally isolating the output & input power signals.

Brown outs were a real problem for me. Standby UPS were of no help. Bought a Liebert online unit and all is right as rain.
House current can fluctuate all it wants. The signal to my PC stays firm.

beowulf7,

thanks for the referral. I am looking into now!

$50 what?
http://www.officedepot.com/textSearch.do?uniqueSearchFlag=true&Ntt=APC+BX1500&x=34&y=14

I see $200

Am I missing something?

Sorry for the confusion. I should've added more detail. OD had a sale on that UPS a few weeks ago, where it sold for $50 AR ($100+tax paid and then $50 MIR). I see that they jacked the price back up. Here are the details to that deal. I don't know if/when that deal will return at OD or elsewhere.

I am sold...... I think!

So the APC refurb I was looking at is a "line interactive"? a type of standby UPS

Those Online "true" UPS are not cheap are they! Not even refurbed.

I guess I have some more to think about.

Any other good links or known deals ?

Thanks again for the info.!

Cheers

Just for the $$$ of them, I am thinking so as well.

Paul, so the one I was looking at is probably fine?

And, my other question about size? I suppose for this tier that is standard? I am currently researching it.

Thanks again for the support.

It should be, though honestly I am not a fan of most of APC offerings at their retail price point. Your sizing is about right for ~10 runtime or so.

You can get a new comparable Tripp-Lite for 119 http://www.provantage.com/tripp-lite-smart1000lcd~7TRPL1JQ.htm

If you're looking for a UPS that will regulate your power and not be an "Online" unit then what you need is a UPS that has AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) OR you need a power conditioner and a regular UPS.

The APC Smart-UPS line does AVR. I have a Black (priorities!!) APC Smart-UPS 1000 hooked up to an OneAC 2kVA power conditioner..

I got the Smart-UPS for free as it was a throw-out and I fixed some front-panel wiring and bought new batteries. I picked up the OneAC from Ebay for $45 plus $20 shipping.

The OneAC regulates the building's power and always gives 122V on the outputs unless the power is out.. Then the UPS takes over..

Edit: I have a set of M-Audio LX4's and the used to pop really bad when my fridge turned on or off. Once I put them on the power conditioner they don't pop anymore..

For home use a true online UPS is overkill.
Not if you have a big problem with brown outs like I do. This refurbished Liebert UPS is industrial strength, and only cost me $185 shipped.
Battery inside makes it so heavy that I built a small cart to move the thing around.

I never have brown outs.

Where I live only 5% of homes have AC. And most of the homes are second homes thus no one loading the grid.

I mostly want clean power but also in the rare event the power goes out, I want time to shutdown and get my generator going.

The trip lite Paul_Johnson linked looks good. IMO .
It has voltage regulation which is my main concern.
So if the voltages are close wont the PSU do the rest of the work cleaning up the power?

Thanks

Well you should be good with a line interactive then. The thread title gave me the impression a clean signal was paramount above all else.

Good suggestions above. Personally I'd try to stay with APC.

Yes, but only to a certain extent. As you would suspect, this puts stress on the PSU. Build two identical systems, one with a standby UPS, and the other with a true online unit. I'd wager the PSU in the second system would last longer. Particularly if your power grid is a bit flaky.

There would be no significant difference in the usable lifespan of a desktop computer with a good line interactive UPS with AVR like the Tripp-Lite.

What about this model, it has AVR and is an Line Interactive Design.

Or is the rand to unreliable?

I am just trying to see if aI can find something compable to the TripLiteand maybe save alittle $$.

thanks

Speaking strictly as personal opinion .... would not suggest anyone deal with Tiger Direct.

Usually either would I !

I am looking at these four all from different stores:
Tripp Lite SmartPro
APC CNB950
APC BR800BLK
Ultra / ULT33044

I was leaning towards the TripLite (1000Vamps/500w/line-interactive/AVR) but the one at CompUsa claims more watts covered (with a less Vamp rating) but a It is unclear whether this model is "line interactive"
And the price is nice for the Ultra at Tiger Direct but also is unclear if it is line-interacticve and what is ULTRA?
The APC at NewEgg certainly is a well known name but is only 800Vamps but it also claims 540watts??

Thanks for the help.

Would you consider a refurbished unit? Here is a very good Liebert true online UPS for $150.

I bought one just like that (except mine is black ) from the exact same seller over 1.5 years ago. Shipping was about $40. Comes with a new battery, which might be bigger than the one in your car.

In case you haven't heard of Liebert. They are a cut above the brands mentioned above. Usually used to power servers, military, and medical computers.

Ugly, but industrial strength. This black one looks better.

$129 for shipping? They must have upped the charges, or you live a lot farther from the seller than me.
Mine was $189 at my door. Thing is so heavy I built a little cart to roll it around.
