What makes a UPS better than the next? Every package seems to feature VA and Watt ratings. Is the higher the number better? Or is there something else I should be looking at?

Honestly, I don't think there much difference between the UPS's you see in best buy or most other retail stores. They're likely the same (or very similar) hardware in different packages (I don't know this for sure, but cheap is cheap). They are all line interupt UPS's, which means the inverter (DC to AC) is only active when there's a brownout or black out and the unit is running on battery. Otherwise the UPS is only filtering power like any other line conditioner. With online UPS's (you need to look at higher end brands for these, i.e. Liebert, Powerware, MGE, GE) the rectifier (AC to DC) and the inverter (DC to AC) are always active providing extremely clean (usually sine wave) power to your system. Be prepared to pay a premium for the good quality UPS's.

The VA and Watt rattings are purely capacity numbers. Just make sure the wattage rating for the UPS is high enough to handle the systems you are hooking up to it.
