Hey

I have an APC powerstack 450. When ever I connect it to my server via serial cable the UPS shuts off and wont turn on to feed power. I've tried both my serial ports and even tried it with my server off. As soon as it's plugged in the UPS shuts off. What could be causing this?

have you tried letting the UPS just sit over night and charge up ? the batteries inside might be drained, and the computer might pull more than what it has causing it to do what it is doing...

that's what happened with mine anyway...

sorry I wasn't clear, the machine is connected to the UPS now, but it shuts down when the serial port is connected to the computer.

A few thoughts

Try a different serial cable

Make sure your cable is a serial cable and not a nul-modem cable.

Check for IRQ conflicts.

Hook one side of a volt meter from the serial cable ground and the other to the ground of your computer, you should have a reading or “0”, if there is any reading at all it should be in one hundredths of a volt, but no more. (A larger reading would indicate DC offset which would indeed cause a problem)

I believe there is a windows UPS update you should take a look at if you already haven’t.

Double check your UPS settings in “display properties / screensaver / power.

Luck

You wouldn't be running Windows 2000 would you? There was a known issue with serial ports and some UPS's I believe it was 2000Pro and server only though and didn't affect XP. I think it had something to do with the way 2000 handles resources, I wish I could remember more for you but it has been a while.

Actually the server is FreeBSD. I'll check and see if it's a null serial cable. I could have swore the cable I used was the one that came with the UPS.

Thanks,
Robert

DON'T USE A REGULAR SERIAL CABLE!

Use the one that came with the unit... 920-0024C or whatever it's called. The pinout is completely different.
