I was thinking of getting a UPS for a bit more protection/smoothing with AVR for my computer.
anyone with any recommendations ?
Thanks.

I got my 800VA APC XS800 from CompUSA for $50 AR. They currently have it for $75 after 30% off at the stores that are closing. Its basically the same as the APC RS800. It's good for up to 540W I believe. http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm. They also have the ES 725VA for $50 after 30% off, which is good for 450W. Keep in mind your system probably won't use all of that power, but in case it does, you can set the software up to shutdown your system before the battery drains out.

Many thanks for the replies.

Oh, sorry Mods for posting in the wrong section.
Put it down to getting old.......... :D
Don't know much about UPS units, so I will have to browse about.

Powerware is better than APC but you'll pay a pretty penny for it.

I've had lots of UPS units.

Consider buying the pricier "smart" UPS type units that do active power filtering and voltage regulation as well.

Smart APC is the APC version. Rather than only kicking on when power fails you run off the battery which is constantly charged giving you regulated perfect sinewavs which does wonders for electronics lifespan. I much prefer those types. You can buy a smart APC from ebay refurbed with new batteries for about a 100 bucks before shipping. That should suit you fine.

You need at least 500VA and don't get any less. 300VA won't power a modern computer and a larger CRT without overloading and shutting off in a power failure. 300VA is only good if you have an LCD monitor and a pretty conservative computer or any laptop....I'd say 500VA is the minimum. I have two modern PCs with two 19" crts and a laser printer attached to a smart APC 1100. That's a little tight, it works fine, but is at about 2/3's power capacity all the time and when the laser printer warms up the APC beeps one time everytime signifiying overload, but it only does it for a second while the power is really drawn heavy by the printer.

Do not buy one of the laydown style belkin units, those are passive power and have .05xx whatever seconds of nopower during a power failure, that very short loss of power is hard on electronics --- not as hard as a complete power failure, but still not good. I personally run all my high end electronics and stereo equipment on power filters. After hosting LAN parties for 10 years and seeing people lose computer components fairly regularly when the circuits overload I've decided I don't go to LAN parties without my UPS units.

APC Back-UPS XS 1500 UPS, 1500 VA with BR24BP Battery Pack.
The best! i have one my self, i get 120Mins run time on battery.

you must be using a laptop.

That unit is rated for 865 watts. At full load the specs read that it lasts 3.7 minutes, at half load only 12.4 minutes. So the average modern gaming computer with a 19" CRT uses just shy of 400 watts. I've had a tester hooked up to several setups I have and that's what they use - genrically. meaning you should get max about 15 minutes with a standard computer setup.

If you are getting 120 minutes you have a laptop that's running on the battery ;)

Many thanks for all the replies............it is helping me to make up my mind.
basically ....at least 500va with AVR and Power filtering, and APC seems to be the most available units here in the UK.
More opinions the better............ :D
