So I recently bought a TrippLite OMNI1000LCD (1000VA/500W) UPS and I am just curious about a few things before I put it to use.

Now, I heard it's not good to use surge/power bars before the UPS or from one of it's outputs but there were some grey areas - seemingly because of bad choice of words but I want to verify. Can a surge/power bar be used on the second power socket of the same line? Something about harmonics and all this gibberish...

i.e.

["."] =||}- UPS
-----
["."] =||}- Surge/Power Bar

Thanks in advance

(nice text drawing :D )

idk if that would be a problem, but why not just plug the surge/Power bar into the UPS?

Well, they (various websites who posed somewhat of an answer to these questions) say that plugging a surge suppressor into a surge surpressor can cause some sort of a loop in which the delay triggers continuously set each other off. Sometimes can lead to explosions, fire and all that good stuff. But beyond that I didn't really find a clear cut answer.

In the manual it states that you SHOULD NOT plug the unit into a surge protector unless it's one of the two models the sell. I have the 1000LCD unit as well and it nice except the USB flakes out pretty often so Windows is constantly connecting, disconnecting the device so I unplugged it. I've yet to own a UPS that had a properly functioning USB connection.

I personally have a powerstrip plugged into a battery backed plug on the UPS for the FIOS router, Vonage box, Gigabit switch and Cordless Phone.

By your awesome text diagram yes you can use a surge suppressor on the second outlet without issue. You should not plugging a surge supressor before a UPS or into a UPS though. And never plug in a laser printer to a UPS.

Yes what you are describing should be fine.

I actually have a strip behind one of my UPS's even. I checked with APC before doing it, and was told with the models I have it's alright.

(Both UPS and strip are APC)

They also went on to make me aware for my equipment to be protected by their protection guarantee all interconnected devices need to be plugged into one of their accepted products.

So like my PC is plugged into the UPS, I shouldn't have my monitor plugged directly in the wall.
