what can one expect for a say $100.00 for a decent UPS? Recommendations? ...and why?

For personal use you can get something pretty decent. There are certainly other good companies out there, but I think you'll find APC is the most recomennded for quality. An important thing to make sure of though, is that ALL lines going into your system. So make sure whatever you buy has sufficient connections (cat, coax, phone, etc...) Also pay attention to how many of the plugs are battery powered. For my main box, I've got the tower, monitor, and modem/router plugged into the battery lines.

Get the highest battery life you can afford. The advertised ratings don't apply to what most of us have. I've got an APC 750VA w/a 19" monitor and a pretty decent system, and I get about 4 minutes.

....been looking for a UPS myself. This one looks like the best for the money, IMHO. The APC doesn't have the capacity nor USB connectivity for that price (if I read the specs right). Anyone have any experience with Opti...??

Thanks - B.B.S.

I've never heard anything negative about Opti's. If you don't need coax protection, it looks alright. Also, all recent APC's have USB connectivity. The usb connector is RJ11 on the input and USB on the output. Check out the accessories picture, top right cable. The Opti does look like a decent deal. I couldn't find anyone selling replacement batteries though.

not sure if u know this, but i found this awhile back on this forum, go to www.belkin.com
look up their UPS or anything and use coupon code: 12345 for 50% off, great deal.

APC has a refurbished section for their website. If money is really tight I would go there.

If you want bang for the buck, do as I do and pickup a used APC Smart-UPS 1000-1400VA units and buy new batteries for $60 each pack. I have two 1400VA's and 1 1000VA and I can run 2 workstations, 2x 21" CRT's and server with two large SCSI arrays and all routers/switches/etc. for over a hour for a total investment of around $200.

Long run times aren't as important to me as protecting the system, and allowing it to shut itself down in an orderly manner when the mains go down. We just had a power outage and son of a gun, it took out one of my memory sticks (I know - weird).

Seems you can (duh) get batteries from Opti but I wonder if a little detective work would allow you to buy the batteries for almost any of 'em OEM.

That Opti @ 1100 VA / $100.00 seems like a decent deal.....??

Regards - B.B.S.

1100 VA for $100 is a good deal, but you know the old saying you get what you pay for ;)
If you look around at APC, Tripplite, and Leibert (top 3 makers IMO) you'll see the prices are higher, theres a good reason for that.

I only trust APC's after lightning struck the line and took one of them out a while back, the UPS was baked, but everything connected to it was still fine, thats what I call clamping power. And have had no hardware failures ever since connecting them, and more stable machines since they regulate and clean the AC output very well.

That Belkin deal looks fantastic. 1100va for under $80. Are Belkin UPS's decent? (sorry if I'm hijacking the thread)

thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll close this one now!
