UPS or Surge protector?

I'm in need of a new surge protector because right now all I have is a power strip, so I was wondering What would you recomend. I know a UPS is better but I don't want to spend more than $50 on one. So at my price limit are there any good UPS's out there for my budget. If not what is a good surge protector to get. Today as I was looking through the ads I found two UPS's:

The first I found is an APC 6-outlet 500VA battery back up. (regularly $60 on sale for $50)
The second is a CyberPower 825VA. (on sale for $55 regularly $100)

I know APC is a good brand but how good is CyberPower? If neither of these is a good move what would one recomend?

My system specs are as follows:

A64 3000+
Epox 8K3DAJ
6800GT
2x512 of A Data pc 4000
5 case fans
Antec smartpower 350watt
160Gig maxtor ATA HDD
Audigy 2ZS
1 Optical drive and floppy drive
1 Eheim 1250 water pump
17 inch monitor
Klipsch pro media 5.1

Thanks

A “good” surge protector will cost you at least if not more then $50.00 alone. If your total budget is around $50 I’d say go for the APC unit. You will get a pretty good degree of protection and also protection from brown outs.

As a budget decision in my opinion that will be your best overall choice.

Any other opinions out there. Just to let you know the CPU is clocked at 2.4Ghz and the Gt is oc'ed a little past Ultra specs.

I just put that CyberPower unit on a PC I built for a kid for xmas. It seems to be pretty much the same as the APC and Dynex units but its really hard to find anything about their internal workings. You should try to get one with AVR because that helps smooth out the AC line noise if its got good circuitry. The UPS is going to do more for you than the surge supressor is, since you're dealing with things that are sensitive to being reset and losing power.

The APC is a better deal than a cheap surge protector because even if it doesnt keep your PC powered on it will offer much better protection against damage. If your power line gets hit by a bolt of lighting a power strip/surge protector wont protect you nearly as well as having the UPS. It also conditions the line and will compensate for small drops in power, line noise, etc.

I went out and bought the Cyber Power unit. It is the AVR model just to let you all know and if any others are in the market for a UPS I purchased it at BestBuy. It was $99.99 with a $25 instant rebate and $20 mail rebate making it $55. It comes with a $200,000 connected equipment warranty which is a very nice bonus. Here is the link to the exact model I got. http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/825avr.htm
