UPS for a quad core system

I just configured my system on APC.com and it recommended the APC Smart-UPS 1500VA. I have a question though, is this a true Online UPS? If i'm going to spend money on a new UPS (my current one is only 900VA) i want it to be the best i can get for a reasonable amount of money. How do i know what im truly getting?

The Smart UPS series units are quite nice, but you do pay for it. If you have the budget and need the output and/or run time the 1500VA model offers, then I would go with it. If a smaller unit will run your system on battery power and you can fore go the extra run time, you can save some money by looking at a smaller Smart UPS model or the Back UPS RS series. I've been running one for a while now on my home server.

That didn't really answer my question of whether that UPS is true online or not. I already said i was running just fine on a 900VA but wanted to step up to a true online solution.

What wattage rating did it come up with?

My system is running off of a Back-Ups RS 1200 and the software shows that I am only using 296watts right now.

System is a cd2 E8400, Asus P5Q Pro, 4GB ram, 9800GT, 7 internal hard drives 3 external hard drives, 2 19" wide LCD Monitors, alesis Powered Monitor speakers, 2 switches, USB hub, Altec Lansing Zune Dock with Zune in it, 20watt CFL Desklamp, and my phone chargers.

I'll tell you from personal experience that the APC Smart UPS 1500VA is a good unit. However it is only capable of outputting about 900watts. If will shut itself off if you pull more power than that. So you need to make damned sure that all the stuff you put on the battery side won't exceed 900watts under any circumstances.

 Sorry need to read slower.

That unit is not an online UPS. Its my understanding that online UPS systems are generally much larger than what we are talking about (5kVA and up).

PLEASE re-read my OP... i dont care about any of that... i only want to know what a true online UPS is. how much they cost and so on.

The APC UPS 1500VA unit is not a true online UPS.

All a "true online UPS" does is run from the battery full time and uses the AC power as a secondary power source. This design isn't the most efficient but it does have one advantage in that there is no switch over time between battery and AC power since it runs from battery primarily. They are typically used in large data centers for multiple pieces of equipment as to my knowledge there aren't any units under 5000VA which the electrical wiring and breakers in your home can't handle anyway. That type of UPS is strictly commercial as far as I know.

I wouldn't worry about it as desktop computers aren't going to be impacted by the switching time from AC power to battery power.
