Last year when we had that big black out on the East Coast I was still able to use my computer because of my UPS. The other day we had another brown out and I was about to brag that I could still use my comp when I realized it was off as well.

I looked at the UPS and it was in the "on" position. When the power came back on I unplugged it for awhile and plugged it back in. After hoping it was a recharging issue I unplugged it from the wall and it beeped stating that there was a power loss but quickly shut off.

I only have my PC and monitor plugged into the "power" outlets while my house phone and some other things are in the "surge" outlets. Is the UPS dead or did it blow a fuse or something?? As long as it is plugged into the wall it works (I guess as a surge protector) but once it loses power....so does everything thats plugged into it.

Sounds like you need a new battery, the batteries in UPS's last a few years and need replacing, dont fret, you can find them online for $11 or so its not terribly expensive.

Dude: that is why Google is your best friend. Throw your model # & brand in there & see what comes up.

20 isnt bad, im sure you can find cheaper (Ive found several for my APC for 10 bucks, check google). No name brands are fine, its just a lead acid battery.

thanks everyone

I got one from zbattery for $13. Hopefully its the battery that is the problem....ill update the thread once it arrives.

Before this thread gets closed, I just wanted to note that 12V 7Ah batteries are very common, and they can usually be found new on ebay for about $8+$12 shipping. I buy my batteries from grubar(I believe that's the name) on ebay and they've been pretty good.

got another question.

now that I have replaced the dead battery with the new one.....what should I do with the old battery? can i just throw it away or does it need to be recycled?

You are going to have to have it recycled at a sepcial recycling location (well that is true in my area anyway). Check and see if you have one of those big battery only retailers in the area and call them up. They should be able to help you out.
