UPS / APC beeps for no apparent reason

I've been using an APC 300va for about four years or so. Recently it began beeping for no apparent reason; it would beep then click as though it were switching to the battery power. Also, for about a year only half of it works...the battery backup side DOESN'T. It's very annoying and I am probably going to replace it very soon but I was just wondering what would cause it. Perhaps the power outlet I am using is screwed up? Has the APC just run it's course? Four years seems to be a decent run I guess.

My guess would be that the battery has finally worn out. They're typical lead-acid batteries and need to be replaced every so often.

Yep. And the batteries I score on eBay (typically sold as "robot wars batteries") have lasted longer than the batteries that come with the UPS! :D

You probaby just need a 12V 7.0Ah sealed lead battery. ;)

Wait a second....so I just need to go to radioshack or some place like that and replace the battery? Wow. I guess I can take back the replacement UPS I just bought, don't you think?

Radio Shack? No. The batteries are about half the size of what you'd find in a motorcycle. But if eBay or an online store isn't an option, see if there's a Batteries Plus in your neck of the woods.

the operative word above was sealed lead acid batteries

alternatives employed outside the enclosure would be possible and even not sealed, however they will vent hydrogen gas and need to be exhausted

For a ton of capacity and excellent high current performance, "wet" lead-acid batteries with ordinary liquid sulfuric acid electrolyte are the way to go. You don't want to knock them over, you don't want to carry them up stairs, you want to make sure there's enough ventilation that the hydrogen they produce while being charged doesn't make your computing life unexpectedly exciting, and yes, they need occasional topping up if you want them to last well. But even a small car battery will give you 25 genuine amp-hours for computer-powering purposes. Only your ability to transport heavy objects limits the capacity you can get from wet batteries in parallel.
