UPS and Windows service, needed?, patch?

Two questions really.
Recently picked up an APC UPS and read somewhere that the software provided can tell the user how much power is being drawn so I might install the software for this reason.

There is a Windows service (2kpro) called "Uninteruptable Power Supply"

-Is it needed?
-why was it patched by Microsoft?
-do you really care?

k, never mind that last one, ;-)
