Hey all,

I know that is is not good practice to cascade a surge protector into a UPS. However, what is the logic behing this recommendation?

At work, we have a large 15 outlet surge strip plugged into a UPS and everything is plugged into the surge strip. I am trying to make a case against this... but I lack the "logic" explanation for this. Any thoughts?

When the UPS is on battery power, inductive circuits in a surge protector will display a higher impedance due to inductive reactance. This is caused by the high frequencies from the "simulated sine wave", which is really just a stepped wave. The high impedance will probably cause the overload circuit in the UPS to trip.

The solution is to just replace the fancy surge strip with a $2 power tap strip with NO filtering or surge arresting.

Actually, I've heard this but have also done it for years.

I do use high-end surge protectors from APC though. That might be a difference.
