Hey guys, i recently purchased a new 1TB Sata2 HDD. Now i have Windows 7 installed on a 160GB IDE HDD. What would be the easiest way to clone my original 160GB onto the new 1TB drive without having any problems once i replace it?
Thanks alot.

linux live cd, run dd.

if you'd rather have a gui, are either of your drives a WD or Seagate? If so, DL the Acronis True Image OEM version from either website and clone your system disk.

I just want to throw this out there that really, a clean install is the way to go, especially if your going to run that Sata drive in AHCI mode.

If you want to clone, Ultimate Boot CD beta v5 comes with a desktop environment which includes clonezilla.

i agree, a fresh install is always recommended. btw, there are ways to enable AHCI after you've already installed the OS in IDE mode -- just google for the procedures (vista/7 is easy, xp is a bit more complicated).

I dont really know what AHCI mode is. All i want to do is swap the IDE for the SATA drive. Im not really that big on tweaking out that last bit of performance or anything, i just want it to work.

Make sure you install the sata drivers before you shutdown windows to clone the drive.

If not your gonna blue screen trying to load the IDE drivers for a SATA drive.

eh, for myself I would go to the drive makers website (assuming they don't include a disk) and grab their cloning software. they all use the acronis stuff. It will walk you through the upgrade. I don't think you need to load any sata drivers. just plug the new drive in, run the software, unplug the old one and be sure the bios boots from the new drive.

Your IDE controller is 3rd party, and your SATA controller is native to your chipset, so your drivers should already be installed unless you disabled your SATA ports in the BIOS.
