Today my roommate asked me about upgrading his videocard in his hp pavillion dv6000 series notebook. Does anyone know if this is possible? Also if it isn't would it be possible to overclock it if we added some sort of cooling to it? I have never heard of upgrading a laptops video card, but then again I have only had little experience with desktops. I appreciate your guys help.

Sincerely,
- Mike

pff nop upgrading vid cards on laptops ain´t possible yet

None of the HP notebooks have interchangeable video cards. The only brand off my top of my head that could is ASUS.

Just about nothing short of upgrading proc or RAM. You can overclock the video card a bit maybe, but you're pretty limited on laptops.

99.9% of consumer laptops have no way of increasing out-of-box gaming experience assuming they have 2GB or more of RAM.

Sometimes Dell laptops have the ability to swap MXM based cards. When I got my Inspiron 9300 it had a 6800Go, about 3 months later I got a great deal on a mobile 7800GTX and popped that in no problem. I was then able to take the 6800Go and swap on a smaller heatsink and put it in a Latitude 820. Point is, it's possible, but it's usually a loophole :p.

It really depends on the laptop. My Dell Inspiron E1705 has had 4 different video cards in it over the last 6 months. It came with a radeon x1400 and I swapped it out for a Quadro 2500m (7900GTX). The 7900GTX stopped working after a few days for some reason so I had to settle for 7900GS which I overclocked.

I recently (1 week ago) Bought a Quadro 1600m (8700m GT) For my E1705 and with a little modification it worked well. There is a 8800m GTS that will fit in my laptop although it has a slight bios incompatibility which causes the screen to remain at lowest brightness. The card is also 500$...

All in all. If you want a cheep gaming laptop and have a little technical know how, the Dell E1705 or the XPS M1710 has over 8 different video cards for it:

Radeon X1400
Geforce 7900GS
Quadro 1500m (7900GS)
Geforce 7900GTX
Quadro 2500m (Geforce 7900GTX)
Geforce 7950GTX
Quadro 3500m (Geforce 7950GTX)
Quadro 1600m (Geforce 8700m GT)

You can get most of these cards on ebay.
