Upgrading to 9600xt, will cpu be enough?

I currently have:

Athlon XP 1600+
MSI KT4V
512 PC2100 Ram
GeForce2 GTS 32MB
DVD
CD
Soundblaster Live
Enermax 350W PS

I am wanting to upgrade to a 9600XT, but don't know if my cpu can handle it. So should I uprgade the vid card or just wait until I can upgrade the mobo, cpu, and ram as well?

If I do get the 9600XT, will that run future games such as HL2 and Doom3?

Thanks for the help.

I have a 1.4 which is what i think the 1600 runs at. (although its a bit quicker)

I noticed a tremendous boost while overclocking. So i know the gpu isnt starving. My 9600 runs at around pro speeds, although it wont go any higher than that :( (passive heatsink, no ramsinks) And it depends on the game, some games are more cpu bound than others.

So yea, you should be fine. Infact itll be night and day differance.

And yes providing the games come out in a year or two (duke nukem forever syndrom) itll run them fine. Hell a gefroce 4 mx should run them. (granted at reduced quality)

although we could both use a processor upgrade :) Im waiting on a game worth upgrading for though. Its funny, i didnt think this system would run as well as it does.

Christ yes you will see an upgrade no matter what upgrading from a GeForce2.

I just got mine (running a 2.8E though) and it works like a beaut

i used a radeon 7000PCI 64mb and i noticed a giant difference

although my 2500 was OCed to 2.2ghz you will still see a noticable difference in 3d performance

Thanks for the input.

How about a 9800Pro instead of the 9600XT? I see newegg has them on sale today for $204. I know my cpu would most likely become a bottleneck with a 9800Pro, but I am planning on upgrading cpu, mobo, etc to a Athlon64 much later this year and would love a 9800Pro. Just concerned if the 9800Pro would function with my current setup and power supply. Or should I just stick with my original choice of the 9600XT?

Thanks again.

I think you will be too CPU limited if you move to a 9800 Pro. I would suggest staying with a 9600 Pro/XT. You really won't benefit much with your current setup from a 9800 Pro.

By all means, I always buy the biggest, baddest video card I can afford.
It makes absolutely no sense to buy a video card based on your processor size, only to have to buy another one after you upgrade the rest of your system.
Even if it is "CPU limited", you are going to get an incredible performance boost.
I ran my 9700 Pro on the same CPU you have and it was awesome!
I have since upgraded to and NF7-S V2, and I didn't need to upgrade my video card.
There is no noticeable difference in gaming performance (don't really care about benchmark scores, can't play a benchmark) although my benchmarks did go up.
