my ti4200 is becoming unplayable in cs:source so im looking to upgrade. at first, i was thinking of waiting on the 6600 gt agp but it seems like it might be a while before those come out (anyone have any sort of eta?) but then i saw the bfg oc6800NU for 250 and figured it would probably be worth the 50 extra bucks to go from 6600gt to 6800nu. also i heard something about softmodding to unlock the pipes on the non-ultra? how is the success rate on this and is there a list of cards that this works well on? or is there some other killer deal i should go with instead?

I would say from the poll I saw over at guru3d the success rate is a bit better than 50% for full unlock, and most people get either the extra pipes or the extra shader.

I'm not sure the success rate is actually that high. Very few on the Futuremark forums have gotten their cards to mod, and the [H] forums on it are filled with a bunch of failures, too.
I'd say the success rate is closer to 25% for both mods. Still a pretty healthy rate of success, but not enough to bank on (the extra vertex shader DOES seem to enable 100% of the time, though, FWIW). Like with overclocking - if you buy a 6800nu, but it for the stock 6800nu performance. Anything else you get is bonus.

Is that with the 15.2 revision of Rivatuner? Because the poll I saw with 15.2 had like 50%+ with full unlock. The older version didn't work nearly as well. Only around 10% failed completely. I would post a link, but guru3d seems to be busted right now.
Mine unlocks full, but then wont OC, so I have some bad pipes.

save your money and get a 6800 gt, i upgraded from a 4200 and this thing is a winner all the way.
Yeah, that's 15.2. The 15.1 unlock method didn't work for ANYBODY. Maybe a half dozen people total got that to work. It was kind of a more limited method, anyway. It essentially only had the card ignore the BIOS, with the assumption that things were only masked or enabled in the BIOS if they were really bad or good. hmm i dunno if its my cpu... i have my ti4200 overlocked to at least ti4600 speeds, 128mb version chaintech. and my cpu is 2.4ghz athlon xp (1700+ overlocked). 512mb of corsair xms PC3200-LLPT. also 10k raptor sata. i run it in 640x480 all in lowest settings and while i get decent frames most of the time 70-100, in battles and when large number of people on my screen (big fights), my frames drop and i can't stand that. optimally, i would like to run in 800x600 in high quality but the frames never drop below ~60. does that poll on guru3d indicate which cards the people are using and the success rate? i would like ot know if a certain manufacturer's card has a better chance of unlocking everything. thanks
