Upgrading, should i wait?

after asking around and looking around for the past couple of days, i'm thinking that i'm just going to wait and slowly buy up parts (with deals and such) up until christmas time or soon after or before to do the final build. I was looking at an 3400+, but now i'm thinking with the 939's i might wait till some of those prices drop and pick one of those up last along with a mobo (again around christmas). I'm going to get this case right away and sit on it.

i have a 6800gt already, dvd +/-RW drive, monitor, mouse, keyboard, 430 antec true power...i have a gig of crucial pc3200 RAM, but i might upgrade that as well.

So i'll want to get another dvd-rom drive (mine just busted)
A new hard drive in the 120 to 200g range.

So i guess my question is, have any of you done it this way, where you just slowly buy up some parts over maybe a 6 months period? Is this a good idea, or does it not really matter? I just really am waiting for cpu prices to drop a little and for things to become more set in stone. plus i always get a nice christmas bonus from my job, so that will really help. Oh i mostly game, do very light home movie editing and my total budget on the whole thing by time i get all the parts i'm thinking will be in the 1000-1300 range (for just the parts i need). i would appreciate any suggestions you have.

personnaly I think you should buy now..
I only upgrade my hardware when i get double the performance or more.
I don't care about a 10% or 20% boost because I overclock everything anyways

Well it's a gateway, so that's one reason i want upgrade, this would be my first build and i'm excited about doing it, here's my current specs:

2.8C Northwood
430 Antec True power
120 ATA
eVGA 6800GT
1 gig of crucial
dvd +/-RW
dvd-rom(which is now shot)

I'm thinking of just waiting till december or so, for the 939's to come down a little in price. I'm just thinking of getting some basic parts now cause my birthday is a week and my wife and others want to know what to buy me....so i'm thinking of just pointing them to a newegg wishlist with parts on it for the future build. Also like i said i will get my christmas bonus by then which will be a great help as far as money goes.

It appears to me that your machine is plenty fine for now. If I were you, I would wait until xp 64 comes out (the retail) and upgrade then or better yet, wait until dual core becomes a sure thing. Out of curiosity what do you use this machine for (gaming, A/V editing)?

that's what i was sort of thinking, what's the expected release of xp 64's? The dual core might be way down the road, won't it? i don't think i want to wait for that...i'm really itching to do my own build!

I mostly just do gaming, but i do edit home movies sometimes but nothing major as far as that goes.

Dual core might become a sure thing by next summer. As for Windows XP 64-bit, it should be coming out in the winter season. BTW, SATA II is also coming out this winter so if you REALLY want to upgrade then do so in Jan/Feb months for better results and more bang for the buck (Nforce 4 is also coming out during those months or it might be earlier).

You're current rig is still pretty fast so I'd wait. I wouldn't spread my upgrade over 6 months, I'd get it all now or all in 6 months as hardware moves so fast it can change alot over that time.
