upgrading SAN drives pointless?

Alright, not really a virtualization topic but this is where the SAN crowd is as opposed to the storage forum.

I am committed to buying a VNXe 3100 as new "tier 1" production storage. This will relegate my current PS5000E to backup storage duties. However, the PS5000E is stuffed with 16 250GB disks. Just for giggles I looked at the Dell web site and it an 8-pack of 1 TB SATA drives for the PS5000 priced at a cool $20,000, do note that I'd need 16 drives.

I understand that the web price is for suckers, but even at some discount that's likely still more money for drives than it would cost to simply buy a new (additional) array.
 
That's crazy. But thanks for pointing that out. I'll use that as competitive info. :)
 
Seriously now, how much is a new dual controller 16TB raw capacity (SATA drives) SAN? Just ballpark to the nearest 5k.
 
There's a post on ars technica ( Equallogic PS4000E - drive costs ) talking about the very same thing and the two points of information that came out of it were that http://www.blacksunequipment.ca is selling Equallogic parts though only with their own 60d warranty.

The other price of info is that someone posted that "Dell gave into customer pressure and released firmware for their raid controllers that enables foreign disks and is on record stating that they will do this one year after first shipment as that is the earliest that a unit will be out of warranty."

Could someone who's in the know please confirm that?
 
You're gonna find a significant performance difference if you're going to 7200 RPM from anything faster... trust me on this.
 
That array currently has SATA I drives in it. I am going to buy a new VNXe with SAS drives and then I'll be using the EQL as slow-storage so 7200rpm drives won't be an issue other than that I am not going to pay 40 grand for 16 of them, that's just retarded, I don't care whether it's enterprise grade or enterprise support or whatever, no enterprise in their right mind will pay 40k for those drives.

That's not going to be an issue if this is going to be used for data replicated from his tier 1 storage.
 
I currently have a couple older Supermicro case/Intel mobo file servers that I would like to pull out of the rack if I could get more storage capacity on the EQL. The Supermicros take up rack space (2x 3U), suck a bunch of power, and dump a bunch of heat, they don't have remote management. The Raid5 capacity on those two units combined is 10TB.

Stocking the PS5000E with 1TB drives will get me what I need. It's just a matter of finding drives that will not be flat out rejected by the array's firmware.
