right now i have a 2.4p4 processor (b i think), 512rdram, planar motherboard, radeon 9700 pro 128mb, 16x dvd rom, 8x dvd-rw/cd-rw combine, 120gb 7200 hard drive, and audigy 2 zs. i want to upgrade my computer soon but i only have 300-600 dollars to spend. i also might get more money if i wait more. right now i have a dell but i want to take some parts out of it and use them with some new parts, a new motherboard, and a new case. i want to switch to ddr ram for sure, since it's so much cheaper. i was wondering if i should wait until pci express technology comes out before i upgrade. also, any advice in general about upgrading would be appreciated. thanks.

also, i use my computer for watching movies, playing games, and various programs, and i would like to be able to run games at very high settings and be able to use more than one program that uses a lot of resources at once.
 
I would wait, because there's no reason for you to upgrade that system now. Your not going to be able to re-use that RDRAM, so you might as well wait until you need to get a new motherboard, cpu, and memory.
 
I would get an AMD64 3000-3200+ system. Those are more or less on the cheap now and still very powerful. As per your vid card, well, i would wait untill what new next gen mid range cards nivida and ati have to offer.
 
Your system is pretty good right now. If need a computer so you can do multitasking get a hyperthreaded p4 2.4 ghz +. To be able to game with all high setting really depends on what games your playing. The new highend ATI & Nvidia cards would work, but they also cost lots of money. You could try overclocking your 9700 if it's not already. In general I would suggest that you wait beacause it doesn't seem like you're maxing out your system. Sounds like you're looking for a new mobo, 3200 DDR ram and a HT P4 processor, and maybe a graphics card. $500+card easily

Hyperthreading is an Intel invention. the 64bit AMD CPUs perform as well as if not better the Intels of similiar specs.

I would wait and do a full upgrade and build your own with AMD best bang for the buck.
 
can amd 64's run two high resource consuming programs at once as well as a p4 with hyperthreading can?
