I know this question must come up a lot, but I have been researching a lot and still couldn't come to the conclusion to which processor to get and was directed here to ask. I have a pretty good system 512mb 3200(soon 1024mb) 9800xt 256, ect and am trying to upgrade the processor and motherboard.

I dont want to spend the money to get the new 939 amd64 but was thinking of getting the older ones like 2800+ or 3000+ but I heard that the upgrading in the future would be hopeless beacuse they dont make better cpus with the same pins.

I want to get an AMD Anthalon but was wondering how would upgrading those be in the future, does amd plan on still making anthalon xps in the future

And finally the Intel Pentium 4 2.8 800fsb with 1mb cache with HT. This was my first choice, but I heard AMD was better then intel.

Decide what your computing needs are: games or video processing etc. etc. Then read what the good people here in either the Intel or AMD forums have to say: from thier personal experience, "which" processor or system, may best serve your needs.
Read around a bit here to help you make the right choice for your own needs. Also, the reviews and articles on the main page are most informative. And will add to your research.
Perhaps stay as" current as possible" with your hardware choice, and given the good componets that you have. But taking the hugh leap to new sockets and video systems would require upgrading everything! Leaving your present equiptment useless to you. Something else to consider. But you know that.
I personally prefer Intel in the 478 pin package, either Northwood or Prescott. Largely because they are compatible with my existing equiptment and allow me an upgrade path without losing my house. But "my" preferences don't mean a damn thing. It's simply what I like. And I am most fond of the Intel chipsets that the Intel Processor sits upon. Having tried other alternatives. ;)

Oh and, as to one being "better" then the other as you've heard? Better then what? Better at what application? Better in what chipset? What do you want "your" system to be "better" at? Sheer clock speed, solid application, what? Both brands process. Both do it very well! You've been researching. Research that's led you to post in this forum about possible interest in an Intel system. And maybe you'd like it. As much as you like AMD. You've already made-up your mind. But since you asked: Go for the Intel. And to really break the bonds....go for Prescott.

I think for the average PC user like your self, the Intel 2.8e is a great choice, the smoothness of HT makes everyday tasks a bit more enjoyable.

If I was building a pure gaming rigg for heavy gaming, then I would no doubt look into getting an Athlon 64.

Thats not to say a 2.8e can't game.. You can game very nicely on this cpu, it will still haul ass.
 
Thanks for the replies. The problem is I have heard amd64 for gaming intel for regualr programs...the bad thing is I do a lot of both. I play a lot of games, but also use photoshop, dreamweaver, 3ds max, flash, ect. Sometimes almost all at the same time. I probably should have said that in my first post. Do you still think I should go intel?

IMO Yes, a 2.8 is a great bang for buck right now

Yes a pentium 4 with ht with would suit you perfectly
 
yes, and if the Intel 2.8 you get is anything like the one I have, you can get an extra 900Mhz out of it on air :)

then it will really haul ass!
 
well if your looking to oc i suggest you purchase the 3ghz p4 becuase its known to oc a bit better then the 2.8

It's all luck of the draw there. I know quite a few people that have 30-cap 3.0c's that don't oc worth crap. 3.4-3.5 is the max they can get. I have a 3.0c also with 12-caps that will do 3.6. And I see quite a few 3.0c's that are doing 3.9 and higher also though.

Personally, I'll take my 2.8c @ 270fsb ram 1:1 over my 3.0c @ 240fsb ram 1:1. The higher fsb really makes the system haul ass.
