Hi All,

My Nephew's MOBO is dying so I'm buying him some parts to keep his rig running. The only parts he'll need are a MOBO, CPU, and RAM. I'll be re-using his HD 4850 and the cpu he's coming from is a C2D e6600.

I have $200 to spend and this will be used for school and some gaming (just bought him Just Cause 2).

I'm thinking of going AMD as it's generally cheaper for budget builds, but am completely lost as I've been buying Intel forever. How about the following?

Foxconn M61PMP-K AM3 NVIDIA MCP61P Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186189
$44.99

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727
$109.99

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231310
$21.99

That would be $176.97 shipped.

---OR---

GIGABYTE GA-A55M-DS2 FM1 AMD A55 (Hudson D2) Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128530
$59.99

AMD A6-3650 Llano 2.6GHz Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU (CPU + GPU)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103943
$84.99

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231310
$21.99

Total = $166.97 shipped.

ASRock H61M-DGS LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

There has to be a better motherboard to pair with an AMD 965 than a Foxconn M61PMP-K that uses the nvidia 6150 from 2007 era. It will be missing current features like SATA III or USB 3.0

The I3 might have the most power though of those 3 choices.

with using older parts from a previous build i dont think thats going to be a problem... it sould be fine.

ofc i did see http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157309 it can use either ddr2 or ddr3 so you wouldnt have to buy new ram and save a few dollars

I'd have to recommend the Intel route since it'll provide you with significantly greater performance in games. Also note that even the cheaper Pentium G850 or G860 CPUs will outperform any of the AMD CPUs you listed when it comes to games.

I would rather you with this motherboard/CPU combo paired with that RAM you selected.

$176.98 - Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32120 bundled with: 1x Intel BOXDH61CRB3 LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX ...

Much better motherboard than that AsRock.

QFT. I had that DH61CR board myself, and it has one more PCI-e x1 slot than that ASRock board, plus a legacy PCI slot that the ASRock board does not have. The Intel board does have two fewer USB ports onboard than the ASRock board (four on the Intel versus six on the ASRock), plus the Intel board has an Intel PHY for a NIC versus a Realtek NIC on the ASRock board. Both boards lack HDMI but do have D-Sub (VGA) and DVI-D ports.

Thanks, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on that combo. Went Intel being that he can always throw an i5/i7 in there later if he upgrades the vid card -- and it was only $30 more.
