I currently have:
Dfi Infinity 865pe mobo
2.7 celeron processor(socket 478)
512 megs or ram
6600gt vid card
2x sata drives.

I was thinking about just upgrading the ram to 2gigs, the processor to 3Ghz p4, and a 6800xt vid card.

is it better if i just get a new mobo that supports socket 775 and get a new pci express vid card. or get an amd mobo with an amd processor. If amd what kind? 64 bit? can i get a good one in my budget?

I have about $600 to spend and looking for the best system i can get for gaming, is it better to upgrade the system i have and max it out, or just start upgrading to a new factor.

any advice would be appreciated, thx.
 
you cant go wrong with AMD and its within your budget. Go 64 bit as it runs both ways 32 and 64. the question you have is how fast is your ram and will it run with a new set up as replacing all of your ram can be an added exspense.

AM2 performs better with DDR2-800, but that RAM can handle the overclock. Core2Duo only needs DDR2-533 (see article below), but with RAM prices so high, DDR2-667 is nearly the same price as DDR2-533. Upgrade the RAM with another stick when you get the cash flow. If you'd rather not and want dual channel for better performance right now, go for this 1GB kit instead of the single stick listed in the above configs:
$115 - GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2-667 GX21GB5300DC

The Intel setup would perform better than the AMD setup, at stock speeds. Check out these articles:
