Upgrading Memory

Hi, I need some help picking which memory I should get:

I running 2 X 512mb sticks in two slots right now. They are about 2 years old from Patriot, with timings 5-5-5-15 and 1.8v. They're on a ASUS M2N4-SLI mobo, AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+, running windows vista 64-bit. I recently upgraded to vista and its noticeably slower so I plan to add 4gigs of RAM.

The two options I've been looking at come from the hot deals section:

Patriot: http://shop1.frys.com/product/5200607 $35 AR
Crucial: http://shop1.frys.com/product/5711782 $25 AR

Which one would be better? Or if neither, please recommend something else. Thanks.

[edit] I don't really OC either, i'm pretty much a novice with computers.

I'd avoid crucial right now, heard too many complaints with them. I got the patriots and they overclock really well, stay cool really well too. Not only that the crucials are sold out.

Yep, I agree with this. Failure rates for Ballistix are through the roof, so I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole for anything other than a suicide run. The Patriot kit may be $10 more, but they'll also be more reliable.

I have that exact Patriot kit. Great for the money but it does NOT overclock past 800mhz; at least for me it doesn't. Just keep that in mine. Other than that, it's rock stable at 2.0v and 800mhz with 5-5-5-10 timings. Good enough for me.

Or try these G.Skill's I got mine to 450/900 with just 1.9v. Its more expensive per se but no rebate hassles and its quality stuff. Worth every penny of $50

Yup I'd rather have a $10 instant than $20 by mail. Hate the MIR

I most certainly would've picked up that kit instead of the Patriots had it been available for that price and had I known ahead of time that the Patriots don't overclock past 800mhz. Well, I am running 8x400 (ram in 1:1) so I guess I'm satisfied with my current OC.

Like so many things its about timing. I really got lucky with my parts. I got the EA650 for $65 shipped its now $100. The E7200 and P45 combo for $202 they're now not combo'd and over $230. The G.Skill deal has been around for awhile. When I jumped on it it was $55 now its $50. Bottom Line they're good sticks and anyone considering them should pull the trigger.

Definitely true. I'm considering on getting this kit and selling my Patriot 4GB kit which won't OC past 800mhz. Then again, I'm too lazy to bother with reselling and I still have my old 2GB Patriot kit which I need to get rid of in my closet. I guess I'll just remain as-is until my next upgrade a few years from now. Sadly, my current setup is probably only worth at most 60% of what I paid for it.

Like buying a new car. 15% depreciation the first day. I mean shoot someone was selling an E8400 in the FS forum last week for $100, that's 40% off retail

bleh. the G.Skills is now $60 =/

Thats too bad. You know the egg has ended a lot of deals which ran literally all October long. The G.Skills and the AE650 are the two that immediately come to mind around these parts

=D they're back to 50, I think I'm going to get them later today or tomorrow.

Only other this is I've heard good things about these sticks:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146731

How are they compared to the G.skillz and would the timings work with my original 1gig of patriot memory? Or does timings not matter that much with compatibility? Sorry I really don't know that much details about memory.

Many of us own and recommend the G.Skill's but it is fair to say the mushkin might be just as good, just not as popular. If you don't want to hassle with the MIR just get the G.Skills; cannot go wrong there. At the end of the day don't overly sweat the timings. Real world performance between 4-4-4-12 and 5-5-5-15 is small
