Motherboard: MSI P67A-G45
Ram: Gskill X series 8GB (2x4) DDR3 1333
Cpu: I7-2600k 3.4
Video: XFX Radeon HD 6950 1GB 256-bit GDDR5
Psu: Corsair TX650
Case: COOLER MASTER HAF 922
Drive 1: Intel 320 Series 2.5" 80GB SATA II
Drive2: Generic 500GB

Been looking at replacing/upgrading my PC as of recent. Heavy gaming mostly do some 3ds max work ect.

Unfortunately, the only cost-effective upgrades for that system is a newer, larger-capacity SSD and a larger-capacity HDD (of at least 1TB capacity). A 120GB to 256GB SSD is recommended. All of the other upgrades - CPU, GPU and RAM - cost far more money than their performance benefit justifies. After all, why spend another $600 or so just to gain 3 to 5 percent worth of total performance?

And a switch to an LGA 2011 platform is not at all cost-effective: You'd end up paying well over $1,000 to gain practically zero benefit to gaming.

While I do agree with E4g1e, it's your money and if you wanna upgrade then go for it, but do note that we will let you know just how much performance you are going to gain (or not gain) by upgrading an already mostly modern system.

With that being said, answer these questions and we'll go from there.

I think E4G1e said what I needed to hear for the most part. The computer was used for 3dsmax work for schooling now that i'm finished Its back to gaming time. Figured I would have needed a newer video card and possibly a ram change due to the times. Heard new Tomb raider was pretty heavy on the system and I seem to lag a little in Skyrim figured I would look into things.

You wont notice any performance difference going with a different set of RAM (faster, better timings, etc..). Not a single bit of difference. However, RAM is cheap so ADDING RAM to your system you could do and/or maxing out your motherboard with 32GB is also possible. Granted you wont really notice anything now, but RAM prices most likely wont stay this cheap forever and well, software will continue to consume more RAM not less.

As for the GPU, you're 6950 1GB card is fine for 1080P gaming. As E4g1e said, you're looking at less than 10% increase in performance with a new GPU at this time.
