Upgrading laptop cpu and ram

I am wanting to trade the ram and processor in my laptop with a friend who has the same laptop but more ram and a faster processor. What I am wondering is, how hard would it be to swap the processors on laptops and how much I should pay him? I have built my own pc's quite a few times and upgraded ram and hard drives in laptops before, but I have never messed with a laptops cpu.

It's not very hard. It's almost the same as a desktop. The only difference is the amount of time and taking it apart. You'll have to take the keyboard, and the panel around the keyboard off. Which will require taking screws out from the top and bottom. Not exactly sure but you might just be able to reach the cpu just from taking the keyboard off. I would have it all taken apart and cleaned for the new and warmer cpu, anyways. Also, remember to have all the wires, and heating ducts from the cpu cooler lined up correctly before you put it back together. New CPU paste will be needed. Do NOT attach the new cpu to the present cpu cooler. There may also have to be a BIOS update. It's easier then it sounds. :D

For the RAM, there should just be a little panel on the bottom that only needs to be unscrewed and the RAM will be there.

If it was a job for my business I would charge, $50-70 depending on the amount of time it takes, which is real cheap as it is. :cool:

So, I suppose give him what you feel is best. ;) Make sure it works before you pay him. :p And I would highly suggest that you have an organized way of keeping track of the screws. It's always a crap-shoot when you finish, and there's seven screws left over. :D

Thanks a bunch King! It's sounds like taking the keyboard apart and keeping all the screws organized will be the hardest part.

Not sure if Asus is anythinglike HP/Compaq in terms of support. Compaq has a pdf file showing the disassembly procedure and exact sequence for various repairs/updates. Worth checking to see if Asus support offers the same.
As noted by previous poster, keeping track of screws can be problematic. I take a piece of paper and sketch the locations, and then push the screws through the drawing.
