Upgrading graphics card to 1900XT

My current system is in my sig. I currently have a fairly tight budget to upgrade, covering the following options:

1. Keep my current CPU and get a PCI-e socket 754 mobo and an X1900XT (the cheaper option)
2. Get a 939 mobo with a 3700+ san diego (which I hear overclocks pretty well) and the aforementioned X1900XT

If I game at 1600x1200, will there be much of a difference between the 2 CPUs with this graphics card? My current one doesn't overclock at all. I'm not immensely bothered about being on an obsolete socket mobo, as long as graphics performance isn't badly impacted.
 
AMD is the better of those two, but I what about conroe?
 
You're better off going with the Socket 939 so you can upgrade to Dual core Socket 939 later on if you want to.
 
From what I hear, 754 will actually be around for longer than 939. Hard to believe, I know.
 
At this point you really aren't gaining anything by going to S939. A S754 board with PCI-e is fairly cheap, and that 3400+ runs at 2.4GHz, and will keep up with an S939 chip of the same speed. I say stick with the S754 and add your new video card.

AMD is eliminatin 939 in favor of AM2. They will stop shipping 939 CPU I think Q1 07. Whereas they are keeping Socket 754 around for I think for the lower end Sempron CPU's.

(May not be quite that soon, but they are phasing 939 out first)

Odd, but it is true.
 
hard decission , but i think you might as well change to socket 939 if you are changing mobos ,

amd cpus are getting really cheap right now ,

you can get the x2 4800 for ~ $300

that setup should last you untill amd comes out with something to combat the core duo , which shouldnt be too far off
 
Thanks for the input guys. After consideration I'll probably stick with the 754 if I can persuade myself that I need an X1900XT (wants over needs are sometimes hard to justify :D ). That card should hopefully tide me over until DX10 becomes established and hardware support/games are available. I don't feel I need dual core yet for gaming and though single core AMDs cost buttons nowadays, that's money I'd like to not spend if I can help it.
 
keep in mind crysis 'recommends' a dual core CPU, which to the best of my knowledge is the first game to recommend it, so you might want to think about dual core, especially now that intel and AMD and putting more emphasis on performance per wat and the number of cores, meaning more and more software (games) will start to use more than one core
 
I bought a tforce skt 754 board and an x1900xt. It runs everything fine, I have my 2800 clocked at 2.4ghz.
