So currently I have G3258 + Gtx 750 ti and I was wondering what I should upgrade my GPU to. I've been thinking of getting a GTX 970, but I'm iffy on getting a 4 GB card (or 3.5 if you prefer). But I also had thoughts of getting a used 7950 for $100-120 though it only has 3 GB it would be a nice stop gap since its pretty darn cheap. Overall I don't think I can make the wait for 980 ti/390x to drop the higher end cards cheaper so these are my choices from what I can see.

Edit: Games I usually play are Garry's Mod, Skyrim @ 1440p which I'm looking to max. Though I'm looking forward to play GTA 5 and witcher 3 sooner or later.

I would put my money into a better quad core or better processor first. Games are taking advantage of more and more cores these days.

If it is 1440p you are looking for, a single 970 is not going to cut it unless are willing to either turn down resolution or turn down details.

But I agree with Timta, that G3258, while a good CPU for its price, is barely hanging in there for GTA V certainly. an i5 will be needed to give a decent performance. I'd say just not bother with GPU upgrade right now, and save up until you can upgrade the entire computer, and then decide it from there.

1440p is not as heavy for a resolution as 4k, but it is by no means light. It is close to twice the number of pixels as 1080p.

Nothing less than a quad i5 and a 290/970+ for 1440P, or else you'll be turning stuff down left and right. I woudn't drop any $$$ on the GPU yet, though - pending the new arrivals from AMD. New CPU, definitely.

I'd do as previous posters have said and dump your cash into a better quad core, and step into a 970.. a few more bucks will go a LONG way in this case,, once you start gaming with iit, you wont want to go back.

For 1440p you need a new CPU and video card. For a video card I probably wait or get something used. For CPU an i5 or i7. I would get the i7 k version and see how it plays and see what AMD comes out with. If 1440p is really bad with the CPU still get something used. I don't think there is much difference between the gtx 700 and the gtx 900

Well currently I'm just waiting for broadwell and see how that fares compared to the previous-gen. So I guess more waiting for me then.
