Upgrading GPU

Hey guys. Recently started playing Diablo 3 and found that it's somewhat choppy with shadows turned on even on low settings. All other settings are maxed (minus AA). Game runs smoothly with shadows turned off except for when there are a lot of enemies and particle effects on screen.

Since I don't play any other games except Diablo 3, I was looking to only upgrade my GPU and nothing else. Would upgrading the GPU by itself help me push the shadows up so I can get to max settings? Here's my setup:

Motherboard:
Asus P5Q Pro
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (not overclocked)
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 260
RAM: G.Skill 4GB DDR2 1000
Monitor: Samsung 2493HM (@1920x1200)

My main concern is the cpu bottlenecking, but Diablo 3 doesn't seem to be that reliant on cpu. I've thought about upgrading to a completely new system, but I have no interest in any other games coming out this year so I figure I would just upgrade the GPU for now. Was looking at the GTX 560Ti 448 unless there is another card that would give a better value.

D3 has been show to be CPU light game.

The 560 Ti would be a huge upgrade, but the CPU is still going to be somewhat of an issue. Shadows causing lag is typically a CPU issue. You also mentioned particles and enemies on screen which again is post processing (cpu) and AI ((CPU) not that zombies have much AI :D )

However with your platform, upgrading to even a quad core isn't going to net you much performance because of the architecture of the 775 chips and D3's lack of reliance on cores. You need to get to Nehalem or SB for a boost, which means a new mobo :( Your only option with the current setup is to OC. If you could get a stable 3.5GHz I think you would notice a boost.

Ok, thanks! I guess I might as well just start a new build since my current one is definitely showing its age.
